I can confirm Elder Maxon can't be killed by anyone other than the Sole Survivor. During the quest Blind Betrayal while he boarded the vertibird he was ambushed by Rust Devils as he walked up the stairs and just fell down like essential characters do then got back up after taking a breather. After his treatment of Paladin Dance during that quest, Dance was always the perfect soldier. i didn't care to help him Also bring Hancock on the mission with you it makes the quest alot better because of his dialog it made it feel more realistic.

LONG since patched out. If you do (on a PC) help freefall 0, you will see that while the "enchantment" exists, it is not on a live, in game piece of armor.
